After the close: Stocks drift lower, but Alcoa meets estimates to kick off earnings season

Closing out the day… Stocks closed modestly lower today as traders waited for Alcoa (AA) to kick off earnings season. The aluminum company reported adjusted EPS of 6 cents per share which was in line with analysts' estimates.

Among the high-volume stocks today Apple (AAPL), Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Celgene Corp. (CELG) booked gains while Bank of America (BAC), Boeing (BA) and Verizon Communications (VZ) all moved lower. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index closed the day up 0.13 at 13.66 a 0.94% decrease. The Put/Call Volume Ratio is at 0.97 while the Put/Call Open Interest ratio is at 0.90.
