Stocks fail to find direction after mixed earnings, economic news

Closing out the day… Stocks closed down modestly Thursday after a relatively quiet trading day. Traders were unable to find any strong signals in the day's mixed earnings and economic news.

Among the high-volume stocks today Qualcomm (QCOM), Facebook (FB) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Abbot Labs (ABT) booked gains while Amazon (AMZN), Research in Motion (RIMM) and Constellation Brands (STZ) all moved lower. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index closed the day at 14.28 after opening at 14.32. The Put/Call Volume Ratio is at 0.90 while the Put/Call Open Interest ratio is at 0.91.
