Stocks end mixed ahead of State of the Union

Closing out the day… The stocks ended Tuesday mixed ahead of tonight's State of the Union address. The major indices have been in a relatively tight range since Friday afternoon. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 managed to close the day with modest gains, while the Nasdaq was pulled down by a more than 2.5% loss from Apple (AAPL).

Among the high-volume stocks today Bank of America (BAC), JP Morgan Chase (JPM) and Avon Products (AVP) booked gains while Blackberry (BBRY), Facebook (FB) and Coca-Cola (KO)  all moved lower. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index closed the day at 12.63 after opening at 13.37. The Put/Call Volume Ratio is at 0.68 while the Put/Call Open Interest ratio is at 0.92.
