(RTTNews) - Internet service provider Yahoo! Inc.
(YHOO) on Tuesday announced that it has filed a lawsuit against 'Yahoo lottery spammers' for sending unauthorized e-mail messages to internet users making them believe to have won a lottery or prize offered by Yahoo!. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in New York City, under the Federal Trade Mark Act, the Federal Can-Spam Act, and related state laws.
Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo! noted that it does not offer any such awards and has no connection with the spammers or their e-mail communications. Further, the company said through continued litigation efforts it plans to go after individuals who have attempted to negatively impact Yahoo e-mail experience for consumers across the Internet.
The company revealed that this type of lottery fraudulence is commonly know as 'phishing' and hoaxes unsuspected e-mail users into revealing personal data like passwords, credit card information, and social security numbers.
Yahoo is currently blocking 1 billion e-mail messages per day from reaching the inboxes of Yahoo! Mail users.
YHOO is closed Friday's regular trading at $27.72, on a volume of 22,335. In pre-hours trading the stock declined $0.17 or 0.61%, on a volume of $27.55.
