NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, Citigroup, Target, and Home Depot lead the
list of companies with positive news, while it is hard to find a
stock in the red in the pre-market. American Express, Corning, and
Goldman Sachs were upgraded this morning, while AAR Corp was
downgraded.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is back in the saddle again, with nine of the 10
foreign indexes that we track in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a gain of
0.65%. In Asia, Chinese shares clawed back some lost ground as
investors looked for bargains in metals stocks following the
previous session's steep losses. Generally, stocks which lost
heavily in the previous session led Tuesday's rebound. Turning to
Europe, stocks also regained some ground, with banks and miners
among the best performers.
Crude futures weren't exempt from yesterday's broad-based sell-off,
with strength in the U.S. dollar adding to economic concerns for
the commodity. In addition, the advancement of Hurricane Bill –
the first hurricane of the 2009 Atlantic season – and the remnants
of Tropical Storm Ana weighed on the oil patch. Against this
backdrop, September-dated crude shed 79cents to finish at $68.81
per barrel. Earlier in the session, the front-month contract fell
to $66 per barrel – its lowest price so far this month.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,378,416 call contracts traded on Monday, compared to 972,390
put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived
at 0.71, while the 21-day moving average rose to 0.61.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $96.95 and resistance around $101.60. For the Nasdaq 100 (QQQQ),
support is near $38.15 and resistance is around $40.20.
